▲TopWhat the hell is this 'Body Suspension'

Suspension is a ritual, ordeal, form of body play, or rite where a person hangs from flesh hooks put through (normally) temporary piercings in various positions over the body.

While it may seem strange, it should be noted that suspension routinely changes people's lives for the positive — and occasionally negatively.

▲TopDifferent kinds/forms of suspension

  • Suicide Suspension: The most common form. The body is hung vertically from hooks placed in the upper back. A variation to this configuration includes hooks in the arms, this is refered to as a Crucifix Suspension.

  • Vertical Chest: Suspension or O-Kee-Pa style, hooks are placed in the chest of the individual and the body is hung vertically.

  • Superman Suspension: A Horizontal Suspension with the face pointing down.

  • Coma Suspension: A horizontal suspension with the face pointing up.

  • Lotus Suspension: A 'seated' suspension in the lotus position.

  • Resurrection Suspension: A suspension from the torso.

  • Knee Suspension: A suspension from the knees, where the body is hanging upside down.

  • Elbow Suspension: A vertical suspension with hooks in the elbows. There is also the very extreme One Hook Elbow Suspension.

  • Calf Suspension: A vertical upside down suspension with hooks in the calves.

  • Tandem: A configuration where one person is suspended by hooks from another person who is already suspended.

  • Flesh Pulls: Hooks are placed in various places over the body, the participant use their own body weight and strength (and other objects) to put pressure on their hooks.

  • Spinning Beam+: A piece of rigging that can rotate, which can accommodate 2 people at a time with one person suspending from each end.

  • Anything else (that is safe), you are only limited by your imagination.

▲TopFrequently Asked Questions

▲TopDoesn't that hurt?

Of course this differs for everybody depending on various things such as mental readiness, style of suspension being performed and individual pain tolerance.

Some people find getting off the ground painful and then a sense of 'floating' when in the air and others find discomfort during the whole activity. Having said that, nearly everyone enjoys the experience regardless of the pain factor.

▲TopWhy, oh why?

Each person you speak to will have a different reason for wanted to suspend. These reasons can be anything from the simple adrenalin rush to trying to reach a new level of spiritual awareness and anything inbetween.

▲TopModern suspension vs spiritual suspension

The movement towards 'modern body suspension' focuses more on the, for the lack of a better work, sport of the ritual.

It doesn't mean that you can't have a spiritual connection to your suspension, nor does it mean that you will not have your own right of passage - the modern movement choose to focus more on having a good time.

▲TopWhat happens after?

The majority of people will feel bruised, may have some light bleeding and little bubbles of air trapped under the skin, these are commonly known as 'rice crispies'. Suspendees have also noted a sense of higher self confidence and the dreaded post-suspension-emos (which may last anywhere from a few hours to a few days).

▲TopWhy again?

Because the voices instruct me so.

▲TopCan my mum watch?

Sure! Anyone is more than welcome to watch your performance, as long as they are accepting of your activity and supportive of yours and other's attending life style choices.
